Ways To Use Lattice For A Garden
Today, there are many types of gardens. The most common types of gardens are flower gardens and the traditional vegetable garden. Each garden type takes planning, dedication, and time to keep it productive and healthy.
Back in the day, gardens were only in large areas, but now more people are incorporating gardens in small areas as well. A great way to utilize a garden in a small area is with a vertical garden. Everyone can enjoy the type of garden they want, wherever they decide to put it.
Have you considered how you can utilize lattice in any of your garden areas?
With either of the garden types mentioned above, lattice can help you maintain beauty while including functionality to any area.
In a Vertical Garden, climbing and vining plants benefit from structures to climb on for support. A vertical garden lets you maximize the use of a wall or small area. A lattice structure is perfect!
You can construct a decorative vertical lattice screen or trellis that will enhance any location on your property. A lattice trellis or screen can bring new life and beauty to a once plain and desolate area.
There are a couple of things to consider when you plan your vertical garden:
1. Whatever type of lattice structure you choose, you will need to make sure the structure is sturdy and well supported.
By the end of the gardening season, the lattice could be supporting much more weight than it did at the beginning of the season. It would be disheartening to have your vertical garden destroyed due to a lack of proper planning regarding the construction of the support used.
You will also want to consider building the lattice trellis or screen with products that will not rot or deteriorate.
If you intend for this structure to be permanent and stationary, you’ll want products that are going to be weatherproof and stand the test of time – especially if you will be using perennial vines that could be hindered by disrupting the structure they have attached themselves to.
2. Consider whether or not your support will be a decorative feature or simply structural for hosting the plant.
You can create a focal point with a decorative structure. You can even create privacy with lattice in a vertical garden.
With a decorative lattice structure you will have the opportunity to bring beauty to your area while adding the benefit of gardening. If you decide the structure is not for decoration the lattice is still a great option.
3. Now we come to what some consider the hardest part of gardening: What kinds of plants do you want to grow?
Are you leaning towards flowers or vegetables? Each plant you choose per garden area should require the same type support. In other words, you would not want to use a structure made for flowers if you intend to grow flowers and cucumbers on the same structure.
The advantage of using lattice is that you can connect several sections for a great look while the support for each section can be beefed up if need be for the heavier mature plants. Check out some inspirational design ideas for vertical flower and vegetable gardens.
Flower Garden
If you want a floral vertical garden there are numerous climbing plants that will be an attractive addition to your area.
Just to name a few floral choices, you can use roses, morning glories, jasmine, clematis, or honeysuckle to provide decent coverage for your lattice structure while adding colorful beauty and delightful fragrances.
The lattice will allow the vines of each flower to crisscross thru each opening. As the vines reach the top of the lattice structure and the buds begin to bloom you can enjoy your vertical flower garden without losing precious space in any area.
Vegetable Garden
If you want a vertical vegetable garden some of the common vegetables used are; sweet peas, pole beans, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
If you decide on a vegetable garden, some might say you’ll run into a lack of style while providing the strength needed to support the plants.
However, if a single lattice panel structure isn’t enough, consider using multiple lattice panels together in each structure. The combined panels will prove to be sturdy while offering a decorative look.
Make sure each panel is secured to a post that will maintain the weight of the structure as well as the plants themselves. You do not have to give up a decorative look to grow vegetables in a vertical garden. You can be artistic in your design while ensuring the needed stability.
